Coming up next week: October 11-15

Happy Thanksgiving. A reminder there is no school for students on Monday, October 11th.

Student Pick Up: For safety reasons, parents need to physically come to the front door if picking up children early from school. Students will be called to the office only once you have arrived. You may want to sent a note to the teacher so they know the time your child needs to be ready to go. Please give yourself lots of time as it can be a challenge to find students if they are outside at recess (10:10-10:25) or lunch (11:45-12:30) or avoid these windows of time whenever possible.

If late for school: Just a gentle reminder if your child arrives late to school, please have them go to their outside classroom door if before 9:00 am. After 9:00 am, we will welcome your child at the front door.

The Great Car Challenge: This week students begin to compete in our very first gravity car races. Most students built their cars at school but some of our younger students may be doing this at home(check in with your teacher). Over the next two weeks each class will hold their qualifying races coming up with 3 finalists. These students will move into the school primary and intermediate finals.

Volleyball season begins next week for our grade 7 students. Ms. Fontana and Ms. Cermak are coaching our boys team and Mr. Stevens, Ms. Wong and Ms. Sandhu are coaching the girls.

FSAs: The Foundation Skills and Assessment Provincial assessments begin for grade 4 and 7 students this week. Students are assessed on their literacy and numeracy skills.

Students in grade 3 have been busy creating a Caine’s Arcade. Caine’s Arcade is an 11-minute short documentary film by Nirvan Mullick released on April 9, 2012 that featured a cardboard arcade created by then 9-year-old Caine Monroy out of boxes and everyday objects. The boy ran his arcade from his father’s auto parts store in East Los Angeles during mid-2011. Students around the world have created their own arcades inspired by the original film.

Every Friday, a number of our teachers give up their lunch break to do some professional development. Each week we have different presenters come in so we can learn something new.
